The Mind Of Travis Windham

Do you live for digging around for brand new music? The constant high of discovering new brutal sounds and you just can’t get enough of it? Well, there’s a group on Facebook that will fulfill your need to not only find brand new jams, but you get to share your new findings. Constantly engaging with fans just like yourself and talk about everything you enjoy about death metal.
Well there’s a man who’s gone above and beyond for this exact thing. His name is Travis. Technical/Progressive/Melodic/Brutal Death Metal Sharing is the best and most consistent Facebook group for music. The group has the best people around. This inspired me to get into the mind of the founder (Travis).
Lets explore his mind a bit…
What first introduced you into metal and extreme music?
⁃
Well I’ve always heard bands like Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, etc especially Pantera being from the south and Texas. Always grew up around some kind of rock&roll so I just gradually got heavier and heavier. Bands like Through the Eyes of the Dead, The Faceless, Angela era Arch Enemy, older In Flames, older Veil of Maya and a few others were the building blocks. The bands that really immersed me into the death metal scene.
You are consistently digging deep into the underground and supporting bands of all sizes. What tips would you give someone to find new music?
Never stop searching. Places like Bandcamp, the FB group I’ve created and some other pages are great sources of new material if you have time to scroll through a lot of releases/sample them. The internet has definitely upped its game when it comes to finding more underground music. Especially apps like Bandcamp.
With that being said, what are you currently listening to? Is there any guilty pleasure spinning on your playlists?
My playlists usually range from 100-200 songs so I’m constantly jamming a lot of stuff, mostly new. Currently Arkaik and Allegaeon are in heavy rotation as I love both bands. Plus the lyrics in Allegaeon’s new album are extremely identifiable. Not really any guilt pleasures. I jam Queens of the Stone Age every now and then but mainly stay in the death metal section constantly. You can say I’m very one sided with my music choices these days but I’ve done so much listening to all kinds of music I just feel right at home with death metal.
What influenced you to start Technical/Progressive/Melodic/Brutal Death Metal Sharing?
I was snowed in one day over 6 years ago and got tired of the constant negativity in other music groups. Decided I’d try and create somewhere where bands could promote their music in a positive atmosphere and fans could soak up all the new tunes they can handle. Decided to just stick to one genre of metal (and it’s sub genres) so the page wouldn’t be too chaotic. Never thought it would work out the way it did. Took off really fast from almost day one.
The group has grown into its own special community full of great and supportive people. Which in return has brought so many bands to join this Facebook group. Is there motivation to grow this group even further?
Yes definitely, I’d love for this group to expand even further. The admins and I have thought up some things but the pandemic messed up a couple ideas (for the time being). Hopefully we can see this group expand outside of the internet world as well. Who knows what the future could bring (hopefully not World War 3).
Putting up contests for members to win band merch, cds and otherwise is one of the many perks of joining. What other perks would you tell someone about if they haven’t joined up yet?
If you are really into discovering new music and/or having a nice place to talk about the death metal you love then I’d highly recommend joining. We are always glad to gain new members into our giant death metal “family”. The giveaways are a huge plus but I love the music discovering the most. Even I find stuff from members/other admins that I’ve never heard. I love it so much and I love all the kind hearted people that have stuck around in the group since it was created or for as long as they have been.
Closing this up, is there anyone or anything you would like to shout out?
Huge shout out to all my admins because without them, this group would be nothing or complete chaos. Shout out to my parents for never discouraging me away from this music. There are so many bands I’d love to give a shout out to but I’d be typing for ages. Also a big shout out you Gage for the band you are apart of and for being an admin in the group. Appreciate all you do for the scene and glad to have you among us!
Thank you all for taking the time for reading this in depth look of what the man (Travis) is like. Go join the group and get involved!
