Opinionated Metalhead: The Attack on Porno-Grind

Maybe I have a sick sense of humor or maybe I just appreciate metal music of all sub-genres. It is the audible form of art and expression that sometimes has a sick and twisted satirical value. Just when I thought the attack on metal had gone away I found another gem that attacks the sub genre of porno grind explicitly from an unexpected source. Another much larger metal magazine that I would not have expected to voice such bias and ignorance.

Now, I am known for being outspoken and passionate but fuck …someone has to say it. This GEM by Metalsucks shows the level of metal “elitism” and judgement of underground subgenre’s they don’t approve of, while churning out 10 articles a month about Tool and the mystery behind the people that are in slipknot like the rest of us metal-heads give that much of a fuck , that I personally roll my eyes at in disgust. Seriously go look at their last month worth of content and you will see endless articles on Metallica, Slipknot, and Tool. They also had an editorial with a fellow metal musician weighing in. I did not agree with any of her reasons for knocking down the “excuses”.

Now I try to keep my thoughts about the tragedy that occurred in Ohio as well as the others that have happened as of late to a minimum. Not because I have no thoughts on them but because I feel for the most part it does not belong on a music website. But how can you go from saying a shooters actions aren’t about the genre to specifically targeting and saying we need to limit growth to a sub-genre like it is still to blame. The author had me agreeing with him. He has some great coverage on all the facts revolving around the background of the shooter and even went on into his leftist views and treatment of women in a bit more detail than other articles. That is, up until the paragraph that starts with “Most importantly, we must address porno-grind itself…..” which continues on to say the excerpt below that rubbed me wrong the most.

To compare the satirical misogynistic nature of porno-grind to white supremacists after saying that metal should not be blamed for this person’s sick and twisted persona and actions is a two faced cop out. To say that a sub genre of metal should be given no room to survive because the nature of the lyrics offends you is some new level of asinine ignorance or a vanilla sense of humor makes you sound like a pussy. And maybe you are a nice guy Vince …maybe you have a HUGE dick that just worded your article the wrong way but really..how many porno-grind bands did you ask about the inspiration behind their music? I’m curious and happy to hear what input you’ve gotten from the bands in this community about their music let alone the fans and what they get out of it.

Who the fuck are these people that have been saying this for “years”? Who? Are they people who are like mothers against video games? Really ….I want to know….so do a lot of people who read this type of shit. I know you asked people to keep their discussions civil but frankly I am not a fan of the “metal is good except this subgenre…they are shit and deserve to die” attitude.

As a female fan of porno-grind I happen to love the music. I find the controversial and wince worthy naming of albums, songs and bands alike to be hilarious and vastly enjoyable live let alone the lyrics which in some cases sound like they are written by a high school boy who doesn’t know how to masturbate to completion yet and is mad about it. Porno-grind bands have some of the strangest stage props, costumes and just overall on stage demeanor out there . What is there not to love? Yeah sure the build out of their music is no melodic death metal jam but it encompasses metal at its core on being out there and un-apologetically inappropriate at times.

How many rock ballads have been about wanting to get a piece of some young groupie chicks ass or snorting cocaine off of it that haven’t been outrageously condemned because they became hits? Because this isn’t as pleasant to your ears or worded as suavely as you would like you now stick your nose up at it and wont drink your apple-tinis with your pinky out to them? Lames sauce bro.

I’d like to address this whole “the lyrics are about violent sexual acts against woman and therefore they must get their inspiration from the same sort of thoughts or urges” thing. You would think as a woman who has some semi-feminist views I would be offended by the lyrics that reference deep frying babies or that involve disemboweling women and then fucking their rotting corpses but I am not. In fact I find it personally hilarious.

I’m going to tell you right now every single band I have met that crosses over into or is in this community has been nothing but respectful and supportive to me. The level of sexism and misogyny I have experienced doesn’t come from this side of the house. I’ve even written my own lyrics that until today never saw the public eye but I can tell you what inspired them. I had a tattoo artist buddy who was constantly complaining about women who give dry toothy blow jobs. And I was like you know what that would be a great thing to write a metal song about. So here it is in all its sick and twisted taint shredding glory…..

I have no intention of sharpening my teeth and ripping off some unsuspecting dudes tiny penis with my mouth. I get people don’t understand it or they don’t want to understand it and there isn’t really anything I can say to make them understand it fully. But that doesn’t give anyone the right to condemn it. EVEN THE REGULAR PRESS DIDN’T GO AS FAR AS METALSUCKS AND THEIR EDITORIAL WRITER!

The world is not short of sexism, misogyny or violence but instead of boycotting or trying to snuff out a type of music that makes fun of it … maybe condemn those who live by those opinions and values that are being mocked within the music.
