Following the release of their new album “Unbreakable” in February, Bravo Delta invited me out to be part of the making of their music video FIRE. The song

is about women’s empowerment. Overcoming hardships that have been a part of our lives in order to become the strong and independent women so many of us aspire to be.
I’ve been fat shamed, slut shamed, raped, victim blamed and subjected to years of mental spousal abuse. It meant a lot to me personally to be a part of this. Music in itself pulled me out of a very destructive and dark place in my life. Live music in particular has become a true passion of mine.
Participating in this video allowed for a group of amazing and inspiring women who have gone through all different types of struggles to come together and show that our pain and our hardships do not define

us and that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Even if, sometimes, it’s a bit of a journey to finally see it and reach it.
Now when most people think of a music video production, they normally think of and overzealous, overpaid producer and/or director barking orders in an oppressive and stressful environment. This experience was anything but that. Sure there were instructions that participants had to follow. Like where to sit for a specific shot, the pace in which they wanted you to walk and in what order, how to act to keep with the concept of the

video. But we weren’t bossed around like children and were allowed to embrace our individuality.
It wasn’t all work and no play either. We were able to socialize amongst ourselves and goof off a bit. There were lots of playful selfies and an opportunity to meet Alicia Dove from Cherry Bombs . It was great to see her come out and willingly participate in a video for a local band. She was extremely sweet and down to earth .Charlie Hanks from another local band BiPolar also dropped by on her birthday of all days. We sang her happy birthday as a group before shooting the next portion of the video.
I asked if some of the participants would be willing to share their stories and the lovely Morgan Hines gleefully obliged. Here is what she had to say:
“The very first time I listened to Fire, I was in love with it. I felt like the song was about me….and women like me. I have listened to it every single day since the album was released. It gives me a lot of motivation and reminds me of all the shit I have overcome. Even all these years later, I still need those reminders. People don’t realize when they take something from you, or do something so harmful, it never leaves you. It’s a part of you. You learn to accept it, and how to navigate the messiness of it…but it never goes away.
The fact that Cassi’s husband is the one that wrote this song makes it even more

magical to me. As a little girl, I was sexually abused, mentally abused and watched my mom get the shit beat out of her at the hands of many men. I experienced things no person, let alone child, should ever have to endure. When I was 14, I was raped by someone I trusted. It wasn’t a violent rape, but it was rape. I never told anyone what happened. My mom of course eventually found out I was pregnant, but I didn’t tell her how it happened. I let her believe I was just a girl messing around and got caught. Probably because I felt ashamed and as if it was my fault somehow. I know now how absurd that is. Obviously you know I kept the baby! I stayed in school, worked as much as I could, lived on my own with a child at age 16…..I survived.
I finally started sharing my story around the age of 35. It took that long! I finally found forgiveness for the man that did it, and for myself. It’s been such a freeing experience. I still suffer with anxiety, panic attacks and depression from all of the things that happened to me….and it isn’t easy. It’s a fight every single day. But every day is a new day, and I get to start fresh.
All I have ever wanted to do was to inspire people, and let them know that when life knocks you down, you can get up and keep going. Life doesn’t stop because some horrible unexpected thing happens. We are in control of our actions and reactions. We have the power and strength inside of us to fight and win. “
